Your Voice in Augusta

MAMe wants your voice to MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Over the course of the last six months, MAMe members have started the process of injecting themselves into the legislative arena. First, in March, five MAMe members travelled to Augusta to testify in opposition to the 3 percent surcharge that was narrowly approved by a special interest referenda last November. As the partisanship on this issue became evident, the MAMe legislative committee agreed that in order for our voices to be heard, we needed a more precise approach, so we began the process of connecting member businesses with area legislators.

Starting with a meeting at Sterling Rope on the Friday morning before Easter, MAMe has now hosted three legislative roundtables with a total of five legislators and sixteen member businesses breaking away from the shop to join the conversation. These meetings have been marked by a spirited exchange with legislators, balancing the passion of the manufacturing community with an appreciation that these folks have made time to hear these concerns during the busiest leg of the legislative calendar.

In meeting with legislators, our ask has been consistent ‘What should we do to most clearly get our message out to your colleagues?’ Following a passionate exchange with a group of Auburn companies and legislators last week, our ask of Rep. Bettyann Sheats (D-Auburn) was simple-please get us in front of your leadership so we can clearly explain the way the three percent tax impacts businesses that pass through revenue to their personal income taxes. We are efforting that meeting this week and  will provide an immediate follow-up.

Moving forward, it has become clear that one unmistakable need for the entire manufacturing sector is work force development. This session we watched a number of bills come forward that were business as usual-the same groups pushing the same studies and commissions, with little help for manufacturing. So, next session, we hope to submit and pass proactive legislation that will result in a real increase in the availability of manufacturing labor across the state of Maine. Input into this process would be welcome and we hope to present draft legislation to the membership at October’s annual meeting.

If you would like to get involved in this effort, or have questions about other pending legislation before the legislature, please feel free to contact Cathy Nichols, MAMe’s Policy Coordinator at cmsnichols@gmail.com or Zach at ZLingley@preti.com or 207-902-0179.

Steve Tenney, UBS Wealth Management

"Are you planning on selling your family business when you turn 65? or do you plan to sell when your last child is finally out of college? Many owners focus on personal milestones when deciding when to sell their business and retire. But in reality, you need someone to want to buy your business in order to sell it for a decent price. A potential buyer's level of interest often has more to do with external factors than it does your personal circumstances. So instead of only asking yourself when you plan on selling your business, perhaps you may also want to ask when is someone going to want to buy your business."

Michael Ptak, Tax Abilities, LLC

The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners has released their 2016 Report to the Nations on Occupational Fraud and Abuse.  The results from this Global Fraud Study of over 2,400 cases revealed some “fun” facts:

·  Total losses in the case studies exceeded $6 billion.

·  A typical organization loses 5% of revenues annually due to some form of fraud.

·  Asset Misappropriation was discovered in over 80% of the case studies.

·  Asset Misappropriation covers many areas, but the greatest risk to an organization is billing schemes and check tampering.

·   The leading organizational weakness was a lack of proper internal controls, present in over 29% of the cases.

In the past few years, media coverage in Maine regarding fraudulent activity has revealed that all industries are susceptible.  A recent example was the conviction of the Treasurer for a food pantry that misappropriated over $300,000 covering 30+ years.

Pop Quiz:

Name one of the companies that have a system of internal controls so good that it completely eliminates the risk of asset misappropriation from taking place?

Answer:

Stay tuned and read the answer in the next Manufacturing Matters Newsletter!
