OEA Project
(Office of Economic Adjustment)
(Dept. of Defense)
Grant Overview
The Maine Department of Economic & Community Development (DECD) is administering a grant from the federal Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA). The funding allows MAMe to work with Maine companies who are dependent on defense-related work to diversify into non-defense sectors. As part of the deliverables, participating companies will receive warm leads & introductions to potential customers outside the USA in non-defense sectors. Currently 5 companies are being served with more in the pipeline!

Partners: DECD, MMEP, MAMe

Who Qualifies?
Maine companies with defense related, effected, or dependent work of at least 20% of total revenues.

MAMe's Business Group Services (BGS) providers first identify constraints to diversification and propose solutions. The assessment reviews operations & systems, product offerings, sales & marketing,  quality systems, management wishes, and other areas of operation. This is fully funded by the OEA grant.

Technical Assistance
Next, a technical services plan is designed to create diversification opportunities for each company. This can also include B2B lead generation for companies. Our project team is hard at work finding leads for companies that qualify.

To learn more, contact MAMe at info@mainemfg.com
or our OEA Project Team at oea@mainemfg.com

Dream It. Do It.
Maine Manufacturing Day
October 6, 2016

The 2016 MFGDAY was the biggest yet for Dream It. Do It. Maine.  We had over 40 hosts in 15 of Maine’s 16 counties- from Aroostook to York. Over 1350 students attended these events and nearly 650 influencers, such as educators, parents and state/business leaders.

We could not have done it without our committee members and partners from Pratt & Whitney, Jobs for Maine’s Graduates, Central Western Maine and Coastal Counties Workforce Development boards and SME Maine Dirigo.  Thank you to each and every one of you who helped accomplish this outstanding turnout.

We have our first meeting this January to begin planning Manufacturing Day 2017.  Contact MAMe if  you are interested in supporting these Manufacturing Day efforts by hosting a tour for students/educators, contributing to our transportation offset fund, or visiting a classroom near you.

Students from the Robotics Team at Saint Dominics Academy pose with state and local leaders at the Modula Tour on Oct 6, 2016.

Your Voice in Augusta

MAMe is ready to hear your voices and MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

MAMe’ Legislative Committee is preparing for the 128th Legislative Session and is strengthening our presence in Augusta with input from our manufacturing sectors. Industry engagement is the purpose of this endeavor. Our legislators have a serious obligation to understand the needs and perspectives of Maine manufacturing.

The Committee will have the skills and connections of our new MAMe Policy Advocate, Zachary Lingley of Preti Flaherty. Zachary will provide reports and updates of key bills and their status so our members can be informed of legislation that pertains to their business. MAMe also has a new Policy Outreach Coordinator, Cathy Nichols who is studying policy analysis at USM and is determined to keep manufacturing strong buy helping legislators hear the needs of their constituents in the proportions and perspectives that have been lacking in the past. Cathy will be working closely with MAMe’s Legislative Committee Chair Anne Gauthier, Texas Instruments.
The MAMe Board identified the following priority legislative items for the 2016-17 Session:

1.   Cost of energy (electricity & heating sources, cost & availability of electricity & natural gas)

2.    Minimum wage (impact)

3.    Taxes (income, personal property, sales)

4.    Workforce availability

MAMe’s “Take Your Legislature to Work” outreach strategy will be implemented to educate members on top priority issues and how to get engaged with policy makers. This strategy includes an organized effort to link local business members with legislators to educate legislators on the importance of manufacturing to Maine’s economy. Initial outreach will include:

1.    Creating member alerts about key bills that affect your businesses

2.    Connecting members with their respective legislative representatives

3.  Facilitating invitations to legislators to visit businesses of participating members

If you have any particular topic you wish to know more about or want to provide feedback for, please call Cathy at the MAME office 207.747.4406 or email her at cmsnichols@gmail.com

Did you know the 3 major goals of the Manufacturers of Maine Group Trust are to help support a strong loss prevention program, reduce worker’s compensation rates and return surplus funds to the Members?

The Manufacturers Association of Maine and the Manufacturers of Maine Workers’ Compensation Group Trust formed a partnership in 2007 to operate in cooperation with each other to the mutual benefit of their members and the general manufacturing community in Maine.

The Manufacturers of Maine Group Trust was formed in 1993. Its membership includes 21 Maine based manufacturers. The group trust provides workers’ compensation coverage to its members.
Since 1993, the Group Trust has returned just over $9 million dollars of surplus insurance premiums to its members.
