OEA Project
(Office of Economic Adjustment)
(Dept. of Defense)

Grant Overview
The Maine Department of Economic & Community Development (DECD) is administering a grant from the federal Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA). The funding allows MAMe to work with Maine companies who are dependent on defense-related work to diversify into non-defense sectors. As part of the deliverables, participating companies will receive warm leads & introductions to potential customers outside the USA in non-defense sectors. Currently 9 companies are being served with more in the pipeline! This assistance begins with an assessment that leads into technical assistance and B2B lead generation.

Partners: DECD, MMEP, MAMe

To learn more, contact MAMe at info@mainemfg.com

Your Voice in Augusta

MAMe wants your voice to MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

The first three months of the 1st Regular Session of the 128th Maine Legislature has seen very little in the way of substantive policy changes as the several legislative committees are well behind schedule-even by state government standards. Below see a brief update on the areas that the legislative committee has been focusing on:

Taxation:  In late March, hundreds travelled to the State House to testify on either side of a number of bills that would repeal the 3 percent surcharge on incomes over $200,000. MAMe has decided to make this a top legislative priority and worked with a number of members to testify in favor of the repeal. We have also been working to arrange member visits with targeted legislators where there exist a large number of MAMe members in a concentrated area. The first of these sessions will be held Friday, April 14 at Sterling Rope in Biddeford with four legislators planning to attend.

Minimum Wage: Although there has been some movement on the tipped wage credit for service workers, reduction in the base minimum wage, the gradual annual wage increases up to $12, or the indexing to CPI all seem unlikely this session. Many groups have mentioned the indexing piece as a concern that they will be looking at closely in future sessions as this portion of the law does not come into play until the gradual increases have ceased, so this is likely to be a top priority in coming sessions.

Workforce Availability: Senator Nathan Libby of Lewiston has organized a task force on work force development that we are exploring the possibility of participating in. Initial discussions indicate that this is a group that will meet at length over the summer with the goal of reporting out legislation during the 2nd Regular Session in 2018.

Energy: This is an area where Democrats and Republicans become most sharply divided. The environmental lobby has very deep connections within both Democratic caucuses and traditional energy sources are generally close with Republicans. There will likely be a showdown over several proposals to increase access to hydropower and to increase subsidies for solar power, neither of which is likely to survive the opposition party.

The public hearing for a number of bills that suggest a repeal of this tax will be held on Monday, March 20 at 1pm in Augusta. We are hoping to identify at least 5 MAMe members to testify in person, but will also be reaching out to engage members on this issue over the next four months, as the likely result is that any possible repeal seems destined to be a part of a bi-partisan budget deal, likely near the end of the legislative session in June.

If you would like to get involved in this effort, or have questions about other pending legislation before the legislature, please feel free to contact Cathy Nichols, MAMe’s Policy Coordinator at cmsnichols@gmail.com or Zach at ZLingley@preti.com or 207-902-0179.

"Choosing a buyer for your family business can be a complicated process. Should you sell to your employees, or let your family's next generation take over the business? Or perhaps an outside buyer offers the best chance of future success. While this process can be emotional, there are several key factors to consider that may help you make a decision that's best for you- and for your business."

Did you know the 3 major goals of the Manufacturers of Maine Group Trust are to help support a strong loss prevention program, reduce worker’s compensation rates and return surplus funds to the Members?

The Manufacturers Association of Maine and the Manufacturers of Maine Workers’ Compensation Group Trust formed a partnership in 2007 to operate in cooperation with each other to the mutual benefit of their members and the general manufacturing community in Maine.

The Manufacturers of Maine Group Trust was formed in 1993. Its membership includes 21 Maine based manufacturers. The group trust provides workers’ compensation coverage to its members.
Since 1993, the Group Trust has returned just over $9 million dollars of surplus insurance premiums to its members.
