Robotics Institute of Maine

Helping students realize their potential!

RIM is supported solely through the generous donations of Maine companies and grants. The growth and demand of competitive robotics requires more funding. These programs are becoming the gold standard for how middle and high school STEM education can change to offer a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience to prepare students for hi-tech careers. Your donations are used for the following:

»» Team Registration Fees
»» Classroom Kits for Teachers
 »» Replacement of Materials
 »» Maine Tournaments
»» Teacher & Mentor Training

YOU are making a difference! RIM’s efforts have tripled the number of students engaging in hands-on STEM learning!

Wish List for MAME!

Our conference and board room is used for multiple events and meetings.  The room is large at 20’x25’ but our current table is too small to accommodate the numerous people that attend our events! Your association is looking for a donation of a conference table and/or conference table sections for seating up to 25 people. We would be happy to receive chairs as well.

Please contact us at 207-747-4406. Thank you!

Early Start to Winter Kicks Off Natural Gas Price Volatility

Weather is king – This market is 90 percent about the weather. November turned out to be one of the top five coldest months since 1950. More importantly, December moved from “warmer than normal” and shifted decisively to “normal” and then to “colder than normal.” This represented a big shift in weather expectations for December.

Storage is the crown prince – If the market is 90 percent about the weather, that has everything to do with the fact that inventories of natural gas in underground storage are at a low. Inventories of natural gas in underground storage began the month of November at nearly 3.2 trillion cubic feet (Tcf), a 15-year low. Combining low storage inventories with very cold early winter temperatures has proven to be a recipe for a ramp up in prices and high volatility.

Re-Gen, a New MAME Member Shares
Energy Cost Insight

The high cost of utilities is one of the biggest challenges business face in Maine.

Re-Gen is a Maine based company. They install gas fired heat pumps and cogeneration equipment. Gas fired heat pumps run on natural or compressed natural gas. They produce cooling and heating with 40% more heat than comparable electric heat pumps and will operate in extremely cold temperatures. If you are on oil and propane, and your loads are sufficient, Re-Gen can help you convert to compressed natural gas for the installation of this equipment. Their cogeneration equipment makes electricity 24/7 while still being on the grid. If the grid goes down, Re-Gen can provide stand-alone power. They take the heat from the engine and use it for space heating or processing. They can generate heat up to 212 Fahrenheit. Their engines range in size from 35KW to megawatts.

If you can use all the heat from the engine, your costs of producing electricity, all in, will be between $.02 to $.04 per Kw, depending on the cost of your fuel. If properly structured, these come with grants of up to 50% of the cost for the machine and installation. Re-Gen just installed a 35KW machine in Scarborough and received a 50% grant. Under current IRS Tax Codes, these machines and the cost of installation can be written off in year one.

Health Care Matters

The MAME is pleased to update you on our efforts for an Association Health Plan and other matters relating to the health care industry.

In December, the AHP Committee will review stop loss pricing for the AHP. To date, several members have agreed to be part of the AHP Committee which will transform into the AHP Trustee Group to oversee, guide and manage MAME’s AHP.

If you would like more information, please plan to come to the Member Round tables slated for January (TBA) to provide more information on joining MAME’s AHP.

MAME met with new member, the Healthcare Purchaser Alliance of Maine, recently and to assess how the organization can assist with MAME’s AHP. The Healthcare Purchaser Alliance of Maine is a non-profit collaborative of private employers and public trusts dedicated to lowering healthcare costs and improving healthcare quality. The Alliance offers a voice for employers in Maine’s healthcare market and provides expertise on a range of employer-related healthcare issues. They also offer group purchasing programs for pharmacy benefits (ProCare Rx), bundled surgical services (Carrum Health), and a consumer shopping tool (Vitals SmartShopper).

MAME is working on your behalf on top issues such as health care costs, workforce availability and energy. Contact us for more information!

Students from Sanford High School

Manufacturing Career Connection

MAME Members Working with Local Technology Schools

MAME’s Lisa Martin presented to the Sanford Business Roundtable, hosted by Jim Nimon, Sanford Regional Economic Growth Council. The presentation was focused on MAME’s Manufacturing Career Connection (MCC) on student/educator outreach and our efforts to recruit from numerous agencies serving military/veterans, New Mainers, Fedcap participants and corrections. A number of members were there including Hussey Seating, Rubb, Inc., Province Automation, Evonix-Cyro, and The Baker Company.

We were fortunate to have two interns from SRTC present how they secured internships with Rubb, Inc.

Rubb’s New Welding Internship Program is Now Underway.

Four Sanford vocational/technical students have begun a summer internship at Rubb USA. “We’re all having fun and learning a lot,” says Rubb intern and Sanford High School student Alyssa Decker about her first week as a welding intern at Rubb.

Under the tutelage of Steel Shop Manager Derek Gauvreau and Assistant Manager Rob Lane, the four interns: Adreanna Larivierre, Ben Harvey, Joe Wessling and Alyssa Decker have commenced on a summer long learning experience.

“I’m really impressed with the attitude of doing everything the right way. The welders here do it right and want to teach it right… they really take pride in their work,” states Joe Wessling.

Sanford Vocational/Technical High School has always had a reputation for producing high quality and well prepared workers. After some initial contact between school administrators and Rubb Management, an inaugural internship was developed with plans of making this an annual opportunity.

Rubb HR Director Joe Hyatt explains: “Clearly safety is our first concern with the kids, but our guys have really embraced the program and are enjoying sharing their knowledge… it’s truly a win-win situation.” The overall goal of the program is to provide real world experience for these local students and give them an advantage when they enter the workforce.

For Rubb, the internship program is an integral aspect of the company’s values whereby Rubb’s success is dependent on the collaborative, team-oriented working relationships we have with our employees, contractors and local communities. Rubb strives to be a well-respected employer and supports the efforts of local schools.

States Rubb President Dave Nickerson: “As a Sanford High grad, I am extremely proud that Rubb is able to give back to the community and provide real opportunities for local students. I am also equally proud of the staff here at Rubb for their enthusiastic support of the intern program.”
